Amazon’s CloudFront Content Delivery Network (CDN) supplements Amazon’s S3 service by seamlessly caching your content much closer to your website visitors, thus substantially improving speed and latency, while at the same time giving you the additional option of streaming your content (videos, etc) using the RTMP (Flash Media Server) protocol. Sound complicated? It’s really not, read on.
Now that Google is using website speed as a “signal” in it’s ranking algorithms (see related article) it is more important than ever to make your website as fast as you can without sacrificing your quality of content. There is one simply and easy change you can make to Apache (even if your website is hosted) to make your Joomla website substantially (80%+) faster for returning visitors.
Using Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to host your website’s large files (such as MP4 video files and MP3’s, etc) is an excellent way to provide great content to your website visitors in a fast (high bandwidth), convenient, and inexpensive way. And the fact that you’re using Amazon S3 will be completely oblivious to your website visitors.
There are typically 2 ways to use the JW player to play HD video on your web pages, 1) By using “legally debatable” ways around YouTube’s security and downloading the MP4 files directly from YouTube, and 2) Downloading the video(s) from your own web server(s) and having to accept the less than desirable download speed, where your website visitors experience multiple “buffering” interruptions.
Now’s there’s a THIRD option, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and in my opinion, a TOTAL NO BRAINER.
YouTube has recently added High Definition (HD) and High Quality (HQ) video formats to it's selection, and subsequently all of us now have these same format options available for our embedded YouTube videos.
